“My Life in Ruins”

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009
Dear Ted, Randy and Staff,
I just saw “My Life in Ruins” and absolutely loved it!!  I have been to Greece over a 20 year period nearly every year and also lived there so I couldn’t wait to see a funny film about a Tour Manager’s experiences there.  With my ITMI training, I would know to throw that rival, smarmy guide under the bus right from the beginning rather than wait till the end to only take out his air conditioning.  Knowing the Greek people as well as I do, they would probably think it was an accident!!!  My ITMI training would have served me well except in the area of not dating the bus driver.  After his transformation from caveman to Greek God my policy of not ever mixing business with pleasure would have been seriously tested.  HA! HA!
I thought the movie was very accurate in portraying the Greeks as they did in the film (and most likely the condition of the Motor coach).  The hotel worker was a classic as was the Travel Agent.  One of the things you would have to have as a Tour Manager/Guide in Greece is a sense of humor and that was what Nia Vardalos was lacking in the beginning and that is what Richard Dreyfus showed her as you mentioned in your e-mail.  Of course, I had ITMI as my teacher in that department.
I still remember when I thought everyone was laughing at my commentary on Marbella, Spain. I said my step-on guide was the little Spanish doll I brought on board the bus.  The doll was only 4 inches tall so I said she was rather small in stature but big in her knowledge of Marbella.  The commentary from ITMI was to never make fun of small people.  Now, that cracked me up and I have been laughing on tours ever since.    Baklava anyone?
Sincerely,

Jo Curran, another NW Tour Director and I saw it together and loved it.  Her typical pax were pretty typical.  Wat did we learn from ITMI that might have helped?  Oh boy.  I’ll think about that.
I would encourage any and all to see it . . . from the “inside,” it is just very funny.

Saw the movie yesterday.

It you change the itinerary (we are going to the beach instead of etc) you could be in trouble.  Get closer to your people.  The bus driver will not be handsome.  You won’t please them all and Richard Dryfuss will not be one of your passengers.  Loved the stereotypes.  You won’t b be able to work in Europe unless you speak the language?  Forget about historical commentary, no one cares?  Mostly people want to shop so get out of their way.

Cheers,

Claudia Corbett

Dear Ted, Randy and friends,

Yes I saw the movie, made me laugh esp. the Greek that no matter how it was translated you cannot give it justice!

1.  Obviously the outfit this woman agent she was running was the pits!  She was giving preferential treatment to her favorite guy who was 100% Greek. Nia, recently came to Greece, a graduate of History etc. (I can remember all her titles) and wants to be a tour guide.

2.  In Greece a tour guide is licensed by the Greek government ( I am not) and they frown upon foreigners bringing groups, which was not the case in this movie.  I have never seen this kind of beaten up Bus anywhere!  All the drivers I worked with were professional, courteous and extremely helpful to their passengers.

3.  Her group was from all over the place.  She didn’t have a roster with info of each one’s name, where they came from, some kind of history to prepare her for them, as well as what their interests were for this trip.

4.  She was so intense of teaching them all she knew, she forgot that they were on vacation and they wanted to also have fun.  It took almost over half of the movie to get her to reality. I have taken many groups to Greece, which I have organized and arranged with a wonderful wholesaler in Athens.  I design the tour based on what the clients wants and needs are, places they want to see.  Once the tour is set we have a meeting with the group getting feedback making changes where necessary.  We discuss hotels, location, pricing as well as local guides who will accompany the tour whenever necessary in archaeological sites, museums etc.  On the road I do the commentary, circulating maps and explain the surroundings and whatever questions they have.  I may interject some mythology here and there,  I organize picnics when they least expect it and after dinner, I arrange with my driver to take whoever is not tired  out dancing experiencing the local colors.

Touring should be fun and balanced.  Personally I may offer advice for shopping in stores I know, but I never collect kick backs or expect.  I am available when they need my help to negotiate a price and to make sure we all have fun.  I take my groups to places most tourists never go (hidden treasures) as well as little restaurants only locals frequent.

The beauty of organizing my own groups is that I include in the price my expenses, as well as all the tips for drivers and guides.  I don’t find it elegant to pass the hat around.  Instead at the end of the tour, I get a nice card which I circulate to the group to write something to our driver and local guide, put all their money in. seal it and present it to them  at the end of their trip.  Many have also opted to include an individual envelope with more money to each one of them.

Finally did you notice that a lot of the movie was filmed in Spain?  Check the end where all the names and places were mentioned.

If you ever need my help, let me know.

Best regards,

Stella

“Travel as a Political Act”

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Hi,
I know this was a topic from a couple of weeks ago but I think it is an important topic. I have always wondered why Walt Disney did not receive a Nobel Peace Prize. I cannot think of anyone in the 20th Century that did more to promote peace and understanding.
At any rate, from my experience as tourist, tour guide and now working at the Grand Canyon as a concierge, it is my experience from meeting people from every corner of the world that tourism is an antidote for bigotry and hatred. The vast majority of people that I meet and talk with tell me that from their travels in America and other countries that they generally find that from visiting other countries and interacting with with people they leave with a greater respect for the similarities between people. And find they distance themselves from whatever they have read or learned at home that may be passed on out of ignorance.

Ted & Randy.

Have not seen the film but sounds like the tour director could learn much from ITMI. Especially do not have romantic involvement with your coach driver. This can lead to all kinds of problems with your paxYour Pax should be your first prioritynot your driver.

Have a nice day Mike

4th of July Celebrations

Monday, June 22nd, 2009
One of the very best 4th of July celebrations takes place in the Fabulous 40’s neighborhood of Sacramento, CA. It is like a moving Norman Rockwell painting.
All the house are decorated with flags and bunting.
Everyone is bar b quing in the front of their houses. Some tables are casual and some formal with linen, china and crystal..
Everyone is in the front so they can see the parade. The parade has no formal floats; it’s all kids and adults on scooters, bikes or walking there dogs. Everything is decorated in red, white and blue. The parade is very long but everyone has a good time. The fire truck is in the parade and some politicians otherwise it’s all locals.
One of the neighbors has a very old, elaborate ice cream making machine set up in his driveway. That in itself is something to see. When the ice cream is done (takes quite awhile) they invite everyone over for a free homemade ice cream cone.
Best 4th I ever had.
Everybody should check it out but it’s most fun if you know someone and are invited to their bar be que.

I thought the film was TERRIBLE….She could have learned a great deal from ITMI and so could the film maker….It was an embarrassment to TD’s, In my opinion..The only Good character was the Bus Driver…

To love and to be loved is to feel the sun from both sides.
