Tour Director / Tour Guide Resource Library – Western National Parks

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Ted,

This is the only book I still have. Wish I had brought more of them with me.

Now and then on TV I will see references to the “Great Missoula Flood” and I will watch with great interest.

For anything related to Western National Parks I highly recommend the

DVD collection titled “National Parks: America’s Best Idea” by Ken

Burns

Really really great stuff!   thanks, Philip

Hi Ted & Randy

The National Parks in the US have a great series of books under Discover
America's National Parks - every park that I go to I pick up the publication
for that park - the books have different authors - and they tell the story
behind the scenery - they also have publications with the continuing story.
Another part of that series is "Discover America's Heritage" - an
interesting book is Southwestern Indian Tribes.

Ken Burns also has an extremely interesting and well done documentary on the
National Parks of the US. This is an excellent resource.

National Geographic published the "Guide to the National Parks of the United
States - Sixth Edition - another excellent resource.

Hi Ted and Randy,

One book I recommend for Mesa Verde NP is House of Rain by Craig Childs - excellent
semi-archeological picture of the Ancestral Puebloans in the Southwest. The other I
recommend for the Grand Canyon area/Navajos' Monument Valley park is Book of the
Navajo by Raymond Friday Locke.

Cheers,

Tour Guide / Tour Director Resource Library – Western National Parks

Hi -

Two books that I have found useful in gathering information for the Western
Parks tours are:

Pages of Stone: Geology of the Grand Canyon and Plateau Country National
Parks and Monuments, by Halka Chronic and Lucy Chronic

and

Standing Rocks and Sleeping Rainbows: Mile by Mile Through Southeast Utah,
by K.E. Rivers

The "Roadside Geology of ... Utah ... Colorado ... New Mexico ... Wyoming
,,, etc" series of books, many by Halka Chronic, also are helpful.

There is a wonderful DVD entitled "Mule Ride", about doing that in the Grand
Canyon, that is a hit with my guests.

And also, for all the long miles between some of the national parks, I like
to tell stories from the "It Happened In ... Utah ... Grand Canyon ...
Yellowstone ... etc" series of books.

I look forward to seeing the list you compile for these and other
destinations.

thanks for asking.

Dear Ted and Randy,

Always nice to hear from you and I do hope that next time in SF, I can drop by to
say hello.
Your idea of a travel library is excellent but I don't have much to suggest on
Western parks at the moment, not having much experience, the only thing I wanted to
tell you is that PBS, channel 28, produced a wonderful series on National Parks,
which I am sure you know. I would like to be able to get a copy of these myself.

Hope all is well and keep me posted,

Malsy

Ted & Randy,

I definitely have some suggestions for this list. But do not have many of
the books with me. Will need to work on this. Gave a lot of them away as I
was moving to AZ to Scott Johnson who lived nearby and was continuing in the
tour industry.

I like National Geographic publications for specific parks and guidebooks
from AAA. Also, one can contact book stores from one's routing and have
them send their best guide to their area. Not to mention that there is so
much info ONLINE.

Hope that helps and you are all well there!
