Big Basin Redwoods State Park

www.bigbasintentcabins.com

California’s oldest state park (established in 1902) is home to the largest continuous strand of Ancient Coast Redwoods south of San Francisco.  Big Basin Redwoods State Park is a favorite of hikers who walk its 80 miles of trails through inspirational redwood groves, to lush waterfalls and through mixed forests and chapparal. Banana slugs, Steller’s Jays, egrets, herons and woodpeckers inhabit the park, along with deer, raccoons, the occasional bobcat and several rare species.  Tent cabins provide hassle-free camping at bargain prices.  Big Basin is 65 miles south of San Francisco near Boulder Creek (SR 9).

•Angel Island State Park

www.angelisland.com

The largest island in San Francisco Bay, Angel Island State Park provides a fascinating, fun, day trip.  Coastal defense fortifications from the American Civil War to the Cold War and an immigration station that served as the west coast equivalent of Ellis Island during the early 1900s, are visited on tram and Segway tours that circuit the island.  Angel Island State Park is a favorite of hikers, cyclists and picnickers because of its scenic views of San Francisco, the Golden Gate and Marin County. Angel Island is reached by ferry from Tiburon, San Francisco and Oakland/Alameda.

•Lassen Volcanic National Park

www.drakesbad.com

California’s Yellowstone is Lassen Volcanic National Park.  This beautiful national park, in the northeast part of the state, includes the world’s largest plug-dome volcano... the southernmost in the Cascade Range, which last erupted in 1921.  Many of Lassen Volcanic National Park’s trails end at fascinating geologic phenomena... geysers, fumeroles, bubbling mud pots, steam vents, cinder cones and atop volcanic craters.  Rustic luxury is experienced at Drakesbad Guest Ranch in the bucolic Warner Valley and camping occurs at locations throughout the national park.  In winter, snowshoers and cross country skiers enjoy touring along the main park road to geothermal sites.
